October 19, 2009 (Issue #2) – When you’re trying to figure out what to do on a Wednesday night, what is the first place that comes to mind? I’d have to say Soho Lounge. Wax Wednesdays!! What began as an “open turntables weekly,” has evolved into our beloved Wednesday ritual with different local DJs getting down every week for our listening and mid-week-partying pleasure. I mean, who doesn’t have at least one DJ friend or acquaintance that’s played at Soho on a Wednesday?
ECB Mag wanted to give Wax Wednesdays the credit it deserves for being THE local weekly that has truly kept on going, showcasing local talent, having the best vibes and peeps, and keeping their amazing drink specials, so I interviewed the man running the show, PD’s Vinn-e and owner Anthony (Tony) Di Napoli to get the inside scoop…
According to Vinn-e, the concept of Wax Wednesdays came about 2 years ago and they originally wanted “to book people in an open turntables night” except the response was not what they expected. “Not enough people were showing up,” he explained, “so what we did is Tony brought me in but keep [we] kept the name.” Vinn-E says that the objective or motive behind this weekly is “to bring in the older crowd together in a nice atmosphere”. “I’m here to bring the 21 and over crowd to appreciate and understand the music because right now all the parties are focused on the younger crowd,” he added.
I wanted to know why Wax Wednesdays are so popular here in El Paso so Vinn-e told me that the success comes from “the way that it is promoted, the DJs we have each Wednesday and the crowd.” I also questioned him as to who’s been his favorite local DJ that’s played on a Wednesday, of which he laughed and said “Oh man! No comment! All of the above!”
Having gotten a better understanding of what the motives are and where the success of the weekly comes from, I went on to talk to club-owner and personal friend, Tony Di Napoli, and get his take on it. I asked how Wednesdays compare to other nights at the club and he explained that “It’s a whole ‘nother genre. You can’t compare. It’s dedicating the night to the underground.”
As for Tony, it was too hard to point out one particular Wednesday that was especially good. He said, “It’s too hard to say, it’s hard to single out one…with all the promotions companies now…” And in fact, there have been MANY good ones.
So if they plan to keep ‘em coming, I was curious to know if there is anything new and/or exciting planned for the future and Tony told me in a very secretive and excited statement that “Pastilla is coming to El Paso!” As for Vinn-E, he was also excited to tell me that they “will slowly start bringing in big name (healiners) DJs FOR FREE!”
We thank Vinn-e for being the driving force behind it, not to mention our favorite hype-man in the border. We also want to show some love to club owners Tony Di Napoli and Joe Rodriguez for allowing the use of their fabulous club as a venue for Wax Wednesdays. And to all of us regulars at Soho, let’s keep on attending and supporting!! Vinn-e said it best “Everybody should be in it together and we should all stop hating. Let’s be in it together!” Go Back…
